Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed $32 million in state arts and culture grants, crippling museums, arts and theater groups and hundreds of culturally-oriented organizations throughout the state and here in the Keys. There will be no funding this year for Florida’s Cultural and Museum Grants and Cultural Facilities Grants.

At the very least the cuts eliminate the money these nonprofit organizations use to cover the cost of scholarships, free tickets for under-served communities and the ability to do special projects for school children.

DeSantis' reason: Reduce overall state spending.

An email today from the The Studios of Key West asking donors for help in covering the deficit demonstrates the impact of those cuts locally -- on just one local organization:

"Last week, Governor DeSantis made the unprecedented decision to eliminate all State funding for the arts in Florida.

"The $32 million in grants that were due to be awarded account for less than .03% of the total State budget, and yet stood to benefit over 630 worthy organizations in communities throughout the state. These grants had been thoroughly vetted in a bipartisan process, and are proven to generate $9 for every $1 that is allocated.

"Here in Monroe County, $1.37 million had been recommended by the Division of Cultural Affairs for 13 arts organizations. The Studios was poised to receive at least $75k in operating funds and an additional $277,500 for much-needed improvements to our theater."

I recently saw a video of DeSantis bragging about how much money Florida has. He’s just saving it to use for his evil.
